Climate change is often debated at the federal and global level, but the most actionable climate policy happens locally. Cities account for 75% of global carbon emissions, and they have direct control over zoning, transit, building codes, and energy procurement. What CAN a city do? Require new buildings to be electric-only (no gas hookups). Mandate renewables for municipal power. Change zoning to allow denser housing (less sprawl). Invest in transit and bike infrastructure. Update building codes for efficiency. Electrify municipal fleets. What's harder? Transitioning existing housing stock. Retrofitting old buildings. Paying for it. Overcoming NIMBYism on zoning. Getting state/federal regulatory approval. If you were designing climate policy for your city with realistic constraints, what would you prioritize? Emissions reductions, resilience, or economic transition?
